A city with several stories to tell
Bradford’s stone buildings reflect the wealth and industry of the wool trade, but the city is much more than a set of Victorian façades. Independent businesses, food, film, community organisations and the neighbourhoods around the centre all belong in a useful picture of the place.
This directory begins with Bradford and nearby communities including Shipley, Baildon and Saltaire. A business may serve a wider area than its address suggests; check its own description before assuming that it travels throughout the district.
Find your bearings around City Park
City Park and City Hall make a useful central reference point. The public space is close to cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and it gives a different view of the city from the roads approaching it.
Leave room to explore on foot, but check accessible routes and entrances where needed. A short distance on a map can still involve a slope or a busy crossing.
Look up in Little Germany
Little Germany preserves a remarkable group of former merchant warehouses. It is a place to notice doorways, stonework and the way whole streets were shaped by trade, rather than rushing towards a single monument.
The local heritage project provides background and walking information. These are still city streets with homes and businesses, so treat entrances and private buildings accordingly.
Saltaire is a separate part of the day
Saltaire’s planned village and industrial heritage make it a worthwhile destination, but it is not simply another street in Bradford city centre. Plan the journey and allow time to explore its own shops, cultural spaces and surrounding paths.
The wider district also reaches towards places such as Bingley, Haworth and Ilkley. Choose a manageable route instead of trying to fit the whole district into a single afternoon.
Use the right station and local information
Bradford Forster Square and Bradford Interchange serve different rail routes. Check which station your train uses and the onward journey to your destination; the name Bradford alone does not answer that question.
For buses, current services and accessibility, use West Yorkshire Metro. For council matters, start with Bradford Council, whose district includes communities well beyond the central city.
